For my first Non-western post I have decided to post a painting titled The Orchestra, 1991. Oil on canvas 78¾ x 67¾ in by Fernando Botero, b. 1932.
A bit about Fernando Botero:
He is from Columbia and he is considered to be Latin America’s most famous and beloved artist. “Botero is a painter, sculptor, and draftsman who is renowned for his extravagantly rounded, robust forms that are recognizable around the world. Botero is both a masterful storyteller and a critic, whose work is often laden with biting satirical and political commentary. His prolific work is exhibited in public spaces and galleries, and has inspired, challenged and delighted all who see it. Botero challenges the dimensions of our hearts and our minds with his provocative artwork, and celebrates his roots as a man from Colombia.” http://www.boterosa.org
This art piece I found to be colorful and fun. If you notice the guitar player and the drummer have a straight face…not to much excitment once you look at them a second time. But aside from that, when I view this picture I can hear the music and instrumentation accomodated by the fun festive lighting and upbeat rythems that are so indicitive to this region.

I enjoy this piece as well. There is a upbeat feeling and a sense of enjoyment in the painting. I find the guitar player and drummer’s expressions amusing and I like the setting of the painting. I thought you met all the criteria for this assignment. You stated all the information about the painting and gave a great description of the artist Botero. You stated why you chose the painting and your feelings about it. Overall you did a good job on your post.
